Detailed Information

The “Chicago Hardy” fig, while named for its supposed ability to withstand Chicago winters, is not native to Chicago or North America.

The *Ficus carica* species, the Common Fig, is native to the **Mediterranean region and Western Asia.** More specifically:

* **Mediterranean:** From Greece and Italy, across North Africa.
* **Western Asia:** Including countries like Turkey, Iran, Syria, and Iraq.

The “Chicago Hardy” cultivar was likely developed as a hybrid or selected for traits that would allow it to survive colder winters than the standard *Ficus carica*. So, its genetic roots are still in the Mediterranean and Western Asia, but it has been bred or selected for hardiness in cooler climates.
