Detailed Information
Despite its name and popularity in gardens around the world, the Shasta Daisy (Leucanthemum x superbum) is **not** native to the Shasta region of California, nor to North America in general.
It is a hybrid developed by Luther Burbank in California in the late 19th century. However, it’s based on species native to:
* **Europe:** The primary parent species are thought to be *Leucanthemum maximum* (Pyrenean Daisy), *Leucanthemum lacustre*, *Leucanthemum iridum* and *Nipponanthemum nipponicum*, all of which are native to Europe.
Therefore, while the *cultivar* ‘White Breeze’ was developed in the US, the *species’ ancestors* are native to Europe.
