The *Cotinus coggygria*, or European Smoketree, is native to a wide region spanning **Eurasia**, from **Southern Europe** through **Central Asia** and into **China**.
Specifically, areas include:

* **Central Asia:** Turkey, Iran, Caucasus region
* **Eastern Asia:** Parts of China
The cultivar *Winecraft Black®* is a cultivated variety (a selection made by plant breeders) of the European Smoketree. While the original species hails from Eurasia, *Winecraft Black®* was selected and developed in a nursery setting, specifically by Spring Meadow Nursery. So, while the genetic material originates from the Eurasian species, the *Winecraft Black®* variety was created in the United States.
